Tractor Cupcakes

The design for these began when someone asked for a tractor cupcake cake. She wanted a red tractor, resembling an International tractor. I thought about it and thought individual cupcakes with tractors would be fun. So I came up with these designs.

First, I did some research and drew up two different templates. I then broke the templates into it’s smaller pieces and used those as patterns to cut out the fondant.

I made some marshmallow fondant and tinted the frosting to the colors I needed. Then the cutting began! I used different sized circle fondant cutters when possible to save time. Using a sharp non-serrated knife or exato is the best way to go about cutting.

I dipped all my cupcakes into warmed frosting to get a smooth appearance and let them sit to dry. While the cupcakes were drying I started assembling the tractor fondant pieces. When everything was assembled I put them on the cupcakes. For finishing touches I used some black frosting to pipe on steering wheels, seats, and decals.

The time involved in producing these cupcakes was longer than I anticipated, but I’ll have a head start if I make them again since I saved my patterns.

Oh! The pink tractor was made because the person who requested the cupcakes asked for one pink one because she tells her boyfriend she is going to buy a tractor and paint it pink someday!

Karate Cupcakes

Here are some cupcakes I made for a karate theme birthday party. The party was to take place at the dojo, and cupcakes were a less messy option than a cake. The only request given was that the karate uniforms on the cupcakes match the birthday boy’s uniform, which was black with red. Continue reading

Shark Bite

Sharks!

Theses were a request from someone who was looking for something different for her son’s birthday. I wasn’t quiet sure how this idea would work out, but I’m very happy with the results.

I started out by frosting the cupcakes with light blue frosting and adding white details for sea foam. I then piped the sharks body, tail, and fins using a #10 round tip. The eyes and teeth were made with a #2 tip.

Sweet Change: You could also frost the cupcakes in white, or other colors, and make the sharks a light blue.

Mint Chocolate Chip Cake with Cupcakes

This cake was quick and easy to make, and I am very pleased with how tasty it looks too!

While mixing the batter I added in some chocolate chips. After putting the batter into the cake pan, and cupcake papers, I added a few more chocolate chips on top. While everything was baking I mixed up some mint frosting by adding some mint extract and green food coloring.

After the cake and cupcakes were cooled I frosted the cake with the mint frosting. Before the frosting could set I added chocolate chips to the side of the cake. If you perfer you can use mini chocolate chips. I used regular size since that is all I had on hand at the time.

To decorate the cake and cupcakes I used a #22 star tip and added more chocolate chips to garnish. You can never have enough chocolate right?

The chocolate chips I added to the batter really paid off in the end because it added a nice chewy chocolaty texture to the cake. Yum!

Sweet Sixteen Cake

I made this cake in honor my niece’s sixteenth birthday. She likes all colors, which suited me just fine! I wanted to make her a three tier cake since it was a special occasion. The top tier was just for her to keep and take home.

The bottom tier was yellow, the middle was chocolate, and the top was both yellow and chocolate. All tiers were filled with chocolate frosting.

I decided to use buttercream for this cake. I wanted to have a traditional, yet slightly modern feel to the cake since it was for a sixteen year old. I modified the side swags by ending them in dots instead of carrying it all they way through with a solid line. Also, for the bottom border I used swirls for a different look.

I went with a five petal flower instead of roses or daisies to go along with the theme I was using.

On a funny side note, my niece took a picture of this cake with her cell phone and sent it to her boyfriend. He texted back with, “Someone must love you a whole lot!” I told her of course that was true!

Lizards of Many Colors

I’m always looking for new animal designs to put on cupcakes, so I really enjoyed making these lizards! Since lizards can change their colors I had an excuse to make these as colorful as I wanted!

I first made a heavy glaze and dipped the tops of the cupcakes in it to produce a smooth finish on which to pipe my lizards.

I used a #8 round tip to make the body and head. I then switched to a #3 round tip to make the snout, legs, and tail. The body stripe and nostrils were made using a #3 tip as well. I used a #2 tip for the toes, eyes, and tongue.

You could easily make ‘girl’ lizards by using a #2 tip to add eye lashes.

Carrot Cake Bunnies

A cute design for Easter. I wanted to make these bunnies less ‘cartoony’. I tried to pipe a more realistic shape for more adult tastes since most kids I know don’t like carrot cake too much… since its called ‘carrot’ cake.

I started out with regular carrot cake cupcakes and frosted them with cream cheese frosting. I then tinted some more cream cheese frosting orange, pink, green, and black.

First, the grass, easy enough with a grass tip! Next, I used untinted frosting to pipe the bunnies. The pink inside the ears and the eyes finished off the bunny part. The carrots were the most fun to make!

If you use store bought cream cheese frosting out of a can you can add confectioners sugar to it to make it stiffer.

Painted Turtle Cake

This cake was made for a friend who loves turtles and bright colors. I had previously made the Spring Frog Cake for her and I wanted to continue that theme. To make this cake a little different I decided to use a square shape. I used yellow cake and put a strawberry filling between layers.

Instead of using buttercream frosting I used a non-dairy whipped frosting I purchased from a local grocery store. I wanted to give the cake a lighter texture. I used a marshmallow fondant recipe and tinted portions of it purple, pink, and yellow.

After covering each layer and stacking them I decided to try something new. I mixed a litte pit of paste food coloring and water to make edible paint. (After doing this I discovered that using an extract such as lemon instead of water makes a better base.)

Painting the cake was a lot of fun, and it went a lot faster than I thought it would. You have to have a lot of patience for this though, you can’t go back and fix any large mistakes.

I made the turtles out of some left over fondant I had set aside. This is one of the reasons I like marshmallow fondant so much, its very easy to sculpt.

Overall I was pleased with this cake, but I would have liked to add an extra something to it to really bring it over the top. I could have decorated with frosting balloons or added decorative wire with flowers attached.

Mint Angel Food Cake

A great cake for St. Patrick’s Day! I’m sure it would look very nice next to a glass of green beer.

First, I placed an angel food cake upside down on a cake board. Next, using mint flavored whipped topping (you can use Cool Whip and add mint extract and green food coloring.) I filled the hole in the center of the cake and iced the sides.

Next, I put dried chocolate cake crumbs along the sides and top of the cake and added fudge drizzle along the edges. You can never have enough chocolate drizzle on your cakes!

To finish: a swirl of icing with an Andes candy placed on top.

This cake is fast, easy, and looks yummy!
